Abstract
This study aims to investigate the effects of the 'Making Life-review Songs' Program on the self-esteem and life quality of the elderly in a nursing facility. Participants in the research were recruited from the patients in the S geriatric nursing home in N-gu, Seoul. Eight patients were assigned to the experimental group and nine patients to the control group. Those in the experimental group participated in 15 weekly sessions of the 50-minute long 'Making Life-Review Songs' Program. Participants completed a Self-Esteem Scale (SES) and a Life Satisfaction Index-Z (LSI-Z) before and after the program, and the difference between the pretest and post-test scores was compared. In addition, to test the effects of the program, the t-test for independent samples and that for paired samples were performed using the SPSS 18.0. The test results showed a larger increase in the rating of self-esteem and quality of life for those the experimental group than in the control group, showing a statistically significant difference (p<.05). This suggests that the 'Making Life-Review Songs' Program is a useful treatment method for the elderly in psychological disability, having a positive effect in improving their self-esteem and quality of life.
